Traffic rules and tips for all vehicles
Rules for parking a vehicle on the road
Safe parking requires you to follow certain rules:
- Leave enough space between your vehicle and others so as not to obstruct maneuvering.
- Avoid parking too close to private driveways or storefronts so as not to obstruct access.
- Park your vehicle no more than 30 cm from the nearest curb, and always in the direction of traffic.
- When parking on a slope, apply the handbrake and turn the front wheels toward the curb to prevent the vehicle from accidentally rolling away.
Parking signs
Obeying parking signs is also essential.
Here are some examples of signs.
No parking
This sign indicates an area where parking is not allowed.

Controlled parking spaces for persons with disabilities
This sign indicates a parking space reserved for people with disabilities. To park in this space, you must have an accessible parking permit.

Recharging electric vehicle parking only
This sign indicates that public parking is authorized for recharging electric vehicles only. According to the information on the sign, the electric vehicle may or may not be charging.

No parking in winter
This sign indicates certain parking prohibitions that apply only in winter. It is installed at the entrances to municipalities, and at any other strategic locations, as required.

The No Parking in Winter sign is used in conjunction with orange parking control lights to inform drivers that parking is prohibited when the lights are on.

Tab sign under a traffic sign
A tab sign may be installed under a parking sign. A tab sign is used to supplement the information on the sign.
Here are some examples of signs.
This tab sign indicates that the offending vehicle may be towed.

These tab signs are used to indicate that vehicles with an appropriate permit are not subject to the parking restrictions.

A tab sign indicating the name of the municipality or borough may accompany the “No Parking” sign. It indicates that the restriction applies to the entire municipality or borough (in the example above, Côte-St-Luc).
