Financial assistance for full-time French courses for immigrants

The Québec government offers financial assistance to encourage you to take full-time courses. You may be eligible to receive this assistance for course registering and to help cover fees for childcare or for the care of disabled dependents. We recommend that you apply for financial assistance as soon as the session begins. Otherwise, you have 60 days from the start of your session to apply.

If you qualify for financial assistance, you must declare the payments received as part of your annual income tax return to both Revenu Québec and the Canada Revenue Agency. You will receive tax information slips for this purpose. Please note that we do not withhold income tax at source.

Financial assistance for your participation in the courses

You could receive $230 per week.

You can apply for financial assistance for course participation using the same form as your course registration.

You must answer "Oui" (Yes) to the question: « Demandez-vous une aide financière au Ministère pour participer à la formation? ("Are you applying for financial assistance from the Ministère to participate in the training?") »

You are not eligible to receive this financial assistance if:

  • You are already receiving money from:
    • Employment insurance (when unemployed)
    • Social Assistance (Social Assistance Program, Social Solidarity Program, Employment Objective Program and Basic Income Program);
    • the Mesure de formation de la main-d'œuvre à l'intention des individus MFOR-I (Workforce Training Measure Program), of the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MESS);
    • the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité au travail (CNESST),
    • the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (maternity or parental leave).
    • the Financial assistance program for skills recognition (PAFFARC in French);
    • the Financial assistance for Ukrainian nationals (SAPU in French);
    • the Public Automobile Insurance Plan (replacement benefits following a traffic accident paid by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec).

If you do not qualify for financial assistance to attend French courses, you can check your eligibility for financial aid with the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale. See page Mesure de formation de la main-d’œuvre (Workforce Training Measure) (in French only).

You also are not eligible to receive this financial assistance if:

  • You are a person claiming refugee protection in Canada;
  • You are a member of a consular corps, a diplomatic corps or an international organization.

If you receive the $230 financial assistance for French course participation, you cannot apply for transportation assistance.

Financial assistance for the care of your children or disabled dependents

To help you attend a course, you could receive a maximum reimbursement of $25 per learning day for each child who requires childcare.

You can also apply for this financial assistance for the care of your dependents who have disabilities.

If your spouse is also taking a French course, only one parent can receive childcare assistance.

To request reimbursement for child care expenses:

You are not eligible to receive this financial assistance if:

  • The person looking after your child is your spouse or a member of your family;
  • You are a person claiming refugee protection in Canada;
  • You are a member of a consular corps, a diplomatic corps or an international organization;
  • You receive money through the Financial Assistance for Skills Training program (PAFFARC);
  • Another program or agency already covers child care costs.

It is recommended that you apply for reimbursement at the beginning of the session.

You have 60 days after the start of the session to apply for financial assistance.

To find a childcare service, consult the List of available childcare centres (CPE) and daycare centres.

Financial assistance for your transportation

You could receive financial assistance for transportation between your home and your training location if you are receiving money:

  • From Employment Insurance;
  • From Social Assistance (Social Assistance Program, Social Solidarity Program, Employment Objective Program and Basic Income Program);
  • From the Mesure de formation de la main-d'œuvre  à l'intention des individus (MFOR-I) of the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MESS);
  • the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité au travail (CNESST);
  • From Québec Parental Insurance Plan (maternity or parental leave);
  • From the Financial Assistance Program for Skills Recognition Training (PAFFARC);
  • From the Specific Assistance Program for Ukrainians (PSAU);
  • From the Public Automobile Insurance Plan (replacement benefits following a traffic accident paid by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec).

Financial assistance is $25 per week for the duration of your full-time training.

You are not eligible to receive this financial assistance if:

  • You are already receiving the $230 per week allowance for your French courses;
  • You are taking your French courses by distance learning.

The application for financial assistance can be made at the same time as your application for admission to the course.
