Job description

These individuals assemble metal rods or wire mesh to reinforce the concrete of various structures (buildings, bridges, columns, etc.). They work for:

  • Institutional establishments (schools, libraries, office buildings, etc.)
  • Businesses
  • Civil engineering firms
  • Road services

Environment

  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Nontoxic dust
  • Uncontrolled ambient temperature
  • Hazardous workplaces
  • Noise
  • Fire, steam, hot surfaces
  • Electricity
  • Falling objects

Main tasks

  • Read and interpret plans, maps, and drawings.
  • Cut, bend, tie, weld, and install reinforcing steel used in construction.
  • Fabricate and install reinforcement parts and prefabricated elements.
  • Install mechanical joints, anchors, and studs.

Advancement and mobility

  • Qualified Reinforcing Steel Erectors obtain a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.
  • Experience leads to senior positions.

Formation

Also required

  • Apprenticeship certificate of competence to work on construction sites.
