Job description

These individuals install, repair, and maintain telecommunications lines and cables.

Environment

  • Climatic conditions
  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Uncontrolled ambient temperature
  • Hazardous workplaces
  • Electricity

Main tasks

  • Install, maintain, inspect, and repair telecommunication lines and cables.
  • Splice (assemble) and repair cables and optical fibres.
  • Test lines or cables.
  • Record and analyze test results to evaluate transmission characteristics and detect faults or failures.
  • Climb poles or ladders to work at heights.
  • Climb ladders or use aerial ladders to work at heights.
  • Lay and maintain cables in confined spaces (trenches, tunnels, etc.).
  • Help erect and remove telecommunications poles and towers.
  • Operate diggers or other heavy equipment as required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience leads to supervisory positions.
