Flooding
Prepare for flooding
Flooding can occur during spring runoff or wintertime mild spells. Water levels can also rise quickly and significantly during heavy rains, storm surges, or when dikes or dams burst. Certain preventive measures can help you better prepare to confront these situations.
Prepare an emergency plan and kit
In the event of major flooding, it could take time for rescue teams to reach your neighbourhood. You are, therefore, responsible for ensuring your safety. Prepare an emergency family plan and prepare an emergency kit containing the items necessary to provide for your family’s needs for three days.
Find out about your home insurance
Contact your insurance company to determine what your home insurance covers in the event of flooding. Basic home insurance does not usually cover water damage stemming from sewer backups, groundwater infiltration, or overflowing watercourses. However, certain insurance companies propose through the addition of a rider protection that covers damage of this type.
Determine whether your residence is flood-prone
Check whether your residence is located in a flood-prone area covered by a municipal bylaw.
If you live near a watercourse, monitor water levels and flows.
If you live by a river, closely monitor weather forecasts in order to react quickly if conditions deteriorate and consult the tide table.
