Job description

These individuals plan, direct, and evaluate the activities of a retail department or business. They supervise the work of employees in accordance with policies and strategies in force in the company. They manage administrative tasks related to financial operations (budget, deposits, etc.). They take care of promoting and presenting products and manage inventory. They make sure to offer a quality service in order to build customer loyalty. They work for:

  • Health and personal care stores
  • Building material and supplies merchants
  • Department stores
  • Sporting goods, hobby, and musical instrument stores
  • Electronics and household appliance stores
  • Service stations
  • Furniture and home decor stores
  • Clothing and shoe stores
  • Office supplies, stationery, and gift stores
  • Beer, wine, and liquor stores
  • Jewellery, luggage, and leather goods stores
  • Used merchandise stores
  • Bookstores and newsagents

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature

Main tasks

  • Evaluate merchandise needs and place orders, as required.
  • Locate, select, and procure merchandise for resale.
  • Determine the products and services to be sold, set prices, and establish credit policies.
  • Assign tasks to employees and manage human resources.
  • Deal with customer requests and handle complaints.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies.
  • Plan budgets and authorize expenditures.
  • Review market research and consumer trends.

Training and requirements

Formation

Bachelor’s degree or diploma of college studies

Sometimes required

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in business administration in a field related to the product or service being sold may be required.
  • Several years of retail experience at various levels of responsibility are often required.
