Financial assistance for the removal of an oil heating system
Description of the Chauffez vert financial assistance program
The government’s Chauffez vert program offers financial assistance to homeowners who wish to replace their oil or propane central heating system with one powered by renewable energy (electricity, etc.).
Water heater conversions are also eligible under certain conditions.
End of financial assistance on March 31, 2026
Government financial assistance for converting a central heating system from oil or propane will no longer be available after March 31, 2026.
Attention, you must have completed your work and submitted your application for financial assistance before this date.
No application for financial assistance received after March 31, 2026 will be accepted.
Summary of eligible work
To be eligible for financial assistance, work to convert a fuel heating system must include:
- removal of the oil or propane tank (even if it supplies other equipment);
- complete dismantling of the furnace or fuel boiler;
- installation of a new heating system using electricity (or a combination of renewable energies).
Conversion work on a water heater using the same fuel may also be eligible for financial assistance if carried out at the same time.
Expected benefits
There are many advantages to replacing your oil or propane heating system with one powered by electricity or another renewable energy source:
- obtain financial assistance for your work;
- improve the energy efficiency of your home;
- contribute to limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
Completely removing your oil or propane tank will help you eliminate:
- risks of fossil fuel leaks and spills;
- risks of soil or groundwater contamination.
You’ll be able to reclaim extra space in your basement if your tank is located inside the house.
Reminder of current regulation
In Québec, as of December 31, 2023, the installation, replacement and major repair of oil-fired heating appliances are prohibited. Only maintenance and minor repairs are permitted.

Calculate potential savings
If you use only oil or propane to heat your home, you can use the following calculator to estimate your potential savings.
The government subsidy offered by the Chauffez vert program helps you get a quicker return on your investment.
Other financial assistance programs
Other subsidies are available for residential heating system conversions. They are accessible through financial assistance programs offered by the provincial and federal governments, energy distributors and municipalities.
In addition to applying for financial assistance through the Chauffez vert program, you can also apply for subsidies through other programs for all of your work. According to the rules of the Chauffez vert program, the total amount of subsidies obtained must not exceed 80% of eligible expenses.
It is your responsibility to check the eligibility conditions for these programs before submitting your various financial aid requests.
The LogisVert program offers financial assistance for the purchase and installation of very high-efficiency heat pumps.
The installation of another energy-efficient central heating system (e.g., geothermal system) may also be eligible for financial assistance.
You can submit one application for financial assistance to Chauffez vert and another to LogisVert.
The federal government’s Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program offers financial assistance for the replacement of oil heating systems with energy-efficient heat pumps.
Household income must be below the median after-tax income for Canadian households.
You can submit one application for financial assistance to Chauffez vert and another to this federal program.
Compulsory declaration by heating engineers
As of December 31, 2023, the regulation (in French only) forbids:
- the installation of an oil-fired heating appliance;
- the replacement of an oil-fired heating appliance with a heating appliance powered by a fossil fuel (including natural gas from a fossil or renewable source).
If you are carrying out conversion work for an oil-fired heating appliance (boiler, furnace or water heater), don't forget to fill out the mandatory declaration form.
