Financial assistance for the removal of an oil heating system
Eligible work for the Chauffez vert program
Make sure you understand the conditions that must be met to be eligible for financial assistance under the Chauffez vert program.
End of financial assistance on March 31, 2026
Government financial assistance for converting a central heating system from oil or propane is no longer available as of March 31, 2026.
Attention, you had to have completed your work and submitted your application for financial assistance before this date to participate in the program.
No application for financial assistance received after March 31, 2026 is accepted.
Deadline for submitting your application
The work had to be completed before the application for financial assistance was submitted.
You had up to 12 months from the start of the eligible work to apply for financial assistance from the Chauffez vert program.
Attention: The financial assistance for converting oil or propane heating systems under the Chauffez vert program ended on March 31, 2026. To qualify, you had to submit your application before this date. No application for financial assistance received after March 31, 2026 will be accepted.
Your work was considered to have begun, regardless of the order in which you had carried it out, as soon as you had started:
- to dismantle the fuel heating system;
- to remove the fuel tank;
- or install the new heating system.
You had to ensure you completed all your work and submitted your application for financial assistance within the prescribed deadline.
Work carried out by a contractor
To be eligible for the Chauffez vert program, dismantling and installation work had to be carried out by qualified contractors holding an appropriate licence from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ).

Conditions applicable to heating system conversion work
To qualify, heating system conversion work had to meet the following conditions.
Fuel heating system to be removed
- The central oil or propane heating system had to be a source of heat for the home before work begins.
- The work had to lead to the complete dismantling of the central heating appliance, i.e., the furnace or boiler that is powered by oil or propane.
The heating system to be removed could be either hot-air or hot-water circulation.
A natural gas heating system was not eligible for this program component.
Complete tank removal
The work had to include the complete removal of the oil or propane tank, even if it supplied other equipment in the home.
Installation of new heating system
The new heating system you had installed had to:
- be made up of new equipment only;
- meet heating needs that were covered by the old oil or propane system;
- be powered by electricity or a combination of renewable energies (e.g., electric boiler, wood pellet boiler, heat pump.)
The new heating system could be a central heating system that reuses existing warm air or hot water ducts.
Conditions applicable to water heater conversion work
You had to remove both your fuel water heater and your fuel central heating system at the same time, with a view to converting your entire home to renewable energy.
The water heater to be converted had to use the same fuel as the central heating system you wished to remove.
You submitted a single application for financial assistance for all your work.
If you did not heat your home with an oil or propane heating system, the conversion of a fuel water heater alone was not eligible for financial assistance under the Chauffez vert program.
Removable fuel water heater
- The domestic hot water used in a single-family home had to be supplied entirely by the fuel water heater (oil or propane) before work begins.
- The work had to lead to the complete removal of the fuel water heater and its tank.
A natural gas water heater was not eligible for this program component.
For multi-unit dwellings:
- The water heater to be removed must supply all the hot water for at least one unit.
- The number of eligible units is calculated on the basis of the number of units fully supplied with hot water and heated with the same fuel prior to the start of the work.
Financial assistance is calculated using the smaller of these two numbers:
- number of eligible units;
- number of water heaters installed.
Installing the new water heater
The new domestic water heater you had installed had to:
- be made up of new equipment only;
- meet the hot water needs that were covered by the dismantled system;
- be powered by electricity or a combination of renewable energies.
Complete tank removal
The oil or propane tank had to be removed, even if you used it for your fireplace or stove, for the work to be eligible for financial assistance.
You can’t apply for financial assistance from the Chauffez vert program to convert your heating system and water heater if you are keeping an oil or propane tank in your home.
Eligible renewable energies
The renewable energies that could be used to power the new heating system or water heater were:
- hydroelectricity (electric boiler, air-source heat pump or electric baseboard heaters);
- biomass (wood pellets);
- geothermal energy (geothermal heat pump);
- wind power;
- solar energy;
- wood;
- or a combination of these energies.
Once your work is complete, you had to fill out the online form to submit your application for financial assistance.
