Be a commissioner for oaths

Becoming a Commissioner for Oaths

You may apply to be appointed as a Commissioner for Oaths if you are 18 or older and a permanent resident or Canadian citizen.

The mandate of a commissioner for oaths lasts 3 years.

Steps to apply for the first time

  1. Fill out the Application to be appointed as a Commissioner for Oaths This hyperlink will open in a new window.;
  2. Sign the form in the presence of a person who is authorized to administer oaths;
  3. Provide a photocopy of a birth certificate delivered by the authorized authority (e.g.: Directeur de l’état civil This hyperlink will open in a new window. or its equivalent in another province or territory), a Certificate of Indian Status or a valid and signed Canadian passport. If you were born outside Canada, you must provide a photocopy of your Canadian Citizenship Certificate or proof of permanent resident status. If you are a woman using your spouse’s last name, you must also provide proof that you were “married in Québec before April 2, 1981” or “married outside Québec”;
  4. Pay the required fees in accordance with the tariff and accepted terms of payment;
  5. Send all the documents by mail.

A criminal record check will be conducted when your application is processed. You may not be appointed if you have been accused or have offences or convictions that are incompatible with the occupation of Commissioner for Oaths.

Appointment certificate

If your application is accepted, you will receive an appointment certificate by mail.

A new appointment certificate will be sent to you each time your commission is renewed.

If your application is denied, an explanation will be mailed to you.

You reside in Québec and administer oaths:

  • In Québec only: $44.25
  • In Québec and outside Québec: $76.25
