Interpreter (translator)

Interpreters play a key role in the judicial system. Their expertise breaks down barriers and enables everyone to exercise their rights in court, regardless of the language being spoken.

Moreover, the right of any accused person to the assistance of an interpreter is enshrined in the Québec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. A party or witness in any proceedings also has this right under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

For example, if a witness only speaks Spanish, the interpreter listens to what the witness is saying and translates it aloud into French or English, in a neutral way and without bias.
