Rénoclimat financial assistance
Rénoclimat financial assistance for multi-unit residential buildings
For duplexes, triplexes, and multi-unit residential buildings, Rénoclimat financial assistance is sometimes higher than for single-family homes.
Find out how to estimate the grant amount you may receive if you are the owner of a multi-unit building.
Amounts for insulation improvement
For multi-unit residential buildings, the grant amount for insulation retrofitsis increased by applying a multiplier based on the number of units in the building.
| Number of units | Rénoclimat multiplier |
|---|---|
| 2 to 3 units (duplex and triplex) | 1.8 |
| 4 to 6 units | 3.0 |
| 7 to 9 units | 5.0 |
| 10 to 12 units | 6.0 |
| 13 to 16 units | 7.0 |
| 17 units or more | 8.0 |
To check the base financial assistance amounts: Improving insulation.
Example
You add insulation on the flat roof of an 8-unit building.
The current insulating value of the roof is R-10 (RSI 1.8).
After insulating 100% of the surface, the insulating value is R-28 (RSI 5).
The Rénoclimat grant amount will be $1,500 × 5.0 = $7,500.
Amounts for air sealing
Financial assistance for airtightness improvement in a multi-unit residential building is granted based on meeting or exceeding the air-change rate per hour target indicated in the energy evaluation report.
The amounts are the same as those provided for a single-family home.
To check the financial assistance amounts: Improving airtightness.
Amounts for replacing doors and windows
Financial assistance for replacing doors and windows in a multi-unit residential building is calculated based on the number of existing rough openings.
The amounts are the same as those provided for a single-family home.

Amounts for installing mechanical systems
Financial assistance for the installation or replacement of eligible mechanical systems in a multi-unit residential building is calculated based on the number of systems installed.
The number of installed systems must not exceed one per residential unit.
The financial assistance amount per system is the same as for single-family homes.
To check the financial assistance amounts: Installing mechanical systems.
Example
In an 8-unit building, you replace four ventilation systems with four heat recovery ventilators (HRVs).
The financial assistance amount will be $500 × 4 = $2,000.
Special case of semi-detached and row houses
Most semi-detached houses and row houses are considered individual homes under the Rénoclimat program.
However, there is an exception: if semi-detached or row houses are connected by a shared space—whether in the roof, foundation, or living space—they are evaluated and treated as a multi-unit residential building under the Rénoclimat program.
In this case, the financial assistance calculation follows the rules for multi-unit residential buildings.
